A Crafty Solution from Homelodge Article By: Felix Bolger 18/03/2005 - 19:39:54 Homelodge Buildings has supplied one of its Twyford lodges to the Waverley School in Finchhamstead, Berkshire as a solution to space constraints on the main site. The lodge was specified to provide a specialised science, arts and technology department for the independent primary school, with Homelodge supplying a full project management service as part of the contract. The T-shaped building is sited in a very tight location. As a standard lodge, the Twyford measures 6m wide by a minimum of 6m long. The envelope is timber framed and timber clad with panels fabricated offsite in Homelodge’s own manufacturing facility. These are then transported to site ready for fast and immediate installation. Double glazing with toughened glass addresses the security issue and the timber insulation fully complies with the Building Regulation thermal requirements. The timber exterior of the building is protected with woodstain or microporous paint for full aesthetic appeal.
One of the focal features of the lodge is the glazed gablet roof which enables natural light to enter the classroom. This was supplied as an option by Homelodge who also undertook the responsibility of supplying carpets, lighting and specialist classroom equipment including art trough sinks. “The company supplied us with a decorated, fitted classroom ready for occupation which was an important consideration,” says headteacher, Stuart Melton. “We supplied additional items such as intruder and fire alarms and the result is a dedicated classroom away from the main school which is a pleasure to teach in.”
Other options were considered for the location of the arts room but it was the cost effectiveness of the lodge that convinced the school. “It was far more cost efficient to erect this stand alone structure rather than refurbish one of the existing classrooms to the standard that we required,” continues Mr Melton. On average, a Homelodge building is 50% of the cost of a comparable masonry structure with the added bonus of fast installation, minimising disruption to the school operations. Maintenance is undertaken by Homelodge on an annual basis with redecoration taking place after six years.
“The Homelodge solution is ideal for educational establishments where cost, sustainability and low maintenance are key requirements,” comments Felix Bolger of Homelodge. “Our full project management service relieves the burden from the headteacher of co-ordinating all aspects of construction, including manufacture, build, liasing with planners and ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation.”
With considerable experience in the education sector, Homelodge Buildings offer a dedicated service, from design and consultation through to delivery on site and installation. Should there be any problems beyond installation, Homelodge is on hand to help
